There are 356 Aboriginal communities that have dedicated police services, employing 1,333 police officers. Public Safety Canada works with Aboriginal communities and its other partners to provide Aboriginal communities with policing services that respect their ways of life. Some of the policing services are self-administered while others are managed by the RCMP.

Corrections

Public Safety Canada is responsible for developing legislation and policies governing corrections, implementing innovative approaches to community justice, and providing research expertise and resources to the corrections community.

We employ some of the world's most renowned corrections experts. We develop legislation and policy in conjunction with the Department of Justice, Citizenship and Immigration Canada and federal and provincial correctional authorities. We also work with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada and First Nations communities to develop culturally-specific correctional policies and programs.
